Tonight the panthers will take on the Louisville Cardinals, who are ranked 11th in the nation. With the Cards coming off of a big win against Duke and the Panthers struggling over their last month of play, this will not be easy for the Panthers to walk away with a win.
As it stands the Panthers are 19-7 overall (8-6 in ACC)) and currently in 7th place in the ACC rankings. Louisville on the other hand is 21-6 overall (10-4 in ACC) and currently 3rd in the conference as one of the top teams in the nation. Although Pitt has some work to do and should make it into the NCAA tournament, that will not be the case for Louisville, as the are postseason ineligible due to a self imposed ban as a result of some actions of a booster. But Louisville deserves a ton of credit, as they have used that ban as fuel to finish out the regular season strong and prove that either way, they are one of the better teams in the nation.
The Cardinals are coming off of some big wins recently against North Carolina, Syracuse, and Duke as previously stated. They are led by guard Damion Lee and Trey Lewis, who are averaging 16.8 and 12.1 ppg respectively. They have one of the top defenses in the nation at just above 60 ppg allowed and are still looking to prove that they can beat any team in the nation.
As for the Panthers, they have been struggling as of late, and a win tonight would be a huge resume builder for their case in making the tournament. Over the course of about a month or so, Pitt has dropped to scoring under 80 points per game and they have just looked lost on both sides of the ball. They have had to bad losses to NC State and Clemson and lost three in a row to Virginia, Miami, and North Carolina. It seems as though Pitt cannot get over the hump when it comes to defeating teams that are not only good, but have a good reputation.
But tonight Michael Young and Jamel Artis look to right the ship and get Pitt the big win they need so that they can get closer to guaranteeing them a spot in the NCAA Tournament. The game tonight will be home at the Pete with tip off at 8:00 pm.
